Looking to reduce her carbon footprint, remove a smelly oil burner and save money, Katie Farrell has gradually replaced her old systems with up-to-date electric options in her 1960 ranch home. Her first step was installing solar panels in 2017, at a cost of $31,000 to purchase. Two years later, she replaced her electric resistance hot water heater with a heat pump version. In March 2021, she upgraded the roof insulation. And finally, in November 2025, after sealing the basement with blown-in foam insulation, she replaced her oil burner with a ducted system for heating and cooling powered by an air source heat pump. Taking full advantage of Marblehead Municipal Light Department incentives and federal tax credits, Katie has reduced the carbon footprint of her house and is saving money on utility payments. Thanks to improved efficiency and the energy produced by her solar panels, she expects to break even on electricity.
