World Oceans Day Marblehead
June 5 - 8, 2025

Sustainable Marblehead is thrilled to host a full weekend of exciting events from June 5–8 in celebration of World Oceans Day. With something for all ages—from educational talks and a community beach cleanup to children’s activities and a harbor fair—this multi-day celebration honors the importance of ocean conservation while bringing our community together for learning, action, and fun.
One of the weekend’s highlights is the arrival of the iconic, Ted Hood-designed sailing yacht American Promise, known for Dodge Morgan’s historic solo circumnavigation, and now serving as the flagship of the Rozalia Project, an organization fighting marine debris in New England’s coastal waters. The American Promise will be docked at State Street Landing and open for public tours during the Harbor Fair on Sunday, and the captain and crew will be leading events all weekend with us.
Schedule:
📽️ Thursday, June 5 at 8:00 PM – Outdoor Movie Night
Join us on the lawn of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion for a screening of "Around Alone," the documentary chronicling Dodge Morgan’s solo journey around the world aboard the American Promise. Bring your beach chairs and blankets for a relaxing and inspiring evening under the stars.
🌊 Friday, June 6 at 7:00 PM – Ocean Conservation Talk
Head to the Old Town House to hear from two incredible speakers: Massachusetts’ Assistant Secretary and Director of Coastal Zone Management Alison Brizius and the Executive Director of the Rozalia Project Ashley Sullivan. We have also have the honor of welcoming State Rep. Jenny Armini to introduce our speakers. Don't miss this event to learn about the work being done to protect our ocean and coastlines, and how we can all play a role. This is particularly timely as our causeway leading to and from the Neck was recently mentioned in a new MA governmental report as being at risk from climate change in the future, plus the ongoing Municipal Shipyard Resiliency Improvements Project.
🧹 Saturday, June 7 at 9:00 AM – Beach Clean-Up + Debris Sort
Roll up your sleeves and join us for a community beach clean-up at Devereux and Riverhead Beaches. Meet at the gazebo structure at Devereux Beach. Following the clean-up, we’ll gather outside Soall Viet Kitchen (195 Pleasant St.) at 11:00 AM for a hands-on debris-sorting activity to better understand the sources of ocean pollution—and how to prevent it. Pre-registration is requested here.
🍹 Saturday, June 7 from 5:00–7:00 PM – Waterfront Cocktail Party
Join us for a festive evening overlooking the water at the beautiful harbor-front home of former Board Member Jean Skaane and husband, Stein. Enjoy delicious appetizers and drinks generously donated by Shubie’s while supporting ocean conservation. All proceeds benefit Sustainable Marblehead and the Rozalia Project. Tickets are on sale now on our website.
⚓ Sunday, June 8 from 11:00 AM–2:00 PM – Harbor Fair at State Street Landing
Cap off the celebration with our Harbor Fair, featuring:
* Reading of the official World Oceans Day Marblehead Proclamation
* Family-friendly educational activities
* Local organizations and info tables
* Children’s art and ocean games
* Tours aboard the American Promise
We’re so excited to share that the Marblehead Select Board unanimously approved a World Oceans Day Marblehead Proclamation on June 8. The proclamation will be read by Chair Erin Noonan for the first time during the Harbor Fair—don’t miss this historic moment!
Throughout the week, stop by Acorn Gallery and Willie Shaker Gallery to view ocean-themed artwork by local youth artists. All pieces will be featured in an online silent auction to benefit Sustainable Marblehead’s ongoing efforts.
Please come out and support our beautiful harbor and ocean!
