Petra Langer

Executive Director

Petra has an extensive background in communications and public affairs. Her past positions have included Director of Communications for Partners HealthCare, Senior Director of Communications for the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, and Director of Public Relations and Governmental Affairs for the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. She and her husband, Phil Axten, have two children who attended Marble-head public schools. She is an avid gardener and walker and a member of the Cottage Gardeners of Marblehead and Swampscott.

Nancy DeMuth

Co-Founder and

Board Member

Nancy is a physical therapist and holistic health practitioner who is passionate about improving the health of body, mind, spirit, and this planet. She has practiced extensively in the greater Boston area as an orthopedic manual therapist and is well known for her skilled holistic care. She is an active member of Sustainable Marblehead's Conservation Action Group and serves as the organization’s liaison to the Marblehead Board of Health. She walks or bikes, hangs laundry outdoors whenever weather allows, and is an avid composter and recycler.

John Livermore

Co-Founder and

Board Member

John co-founded Sustainable Marblehead in 2017, served as the organization's first executive director, and spearheaded the successful adoption of two environmentally-related warrant articles at Town Meeting on May 7, 2018. He currently serves as Northeast Director of the Center for Sustainable Energy. John has 25+ years of experience in the sustainability field, having worked for nonprofits, engineering firms, utilities, solar companies, municipalities, and the Massachusetts Energy Office. In his spare time he enjoys running, biking, and recording music.

Stephen Saltzman

Board Member

Steve is a physician and general internist who has practiced on the North Shore for over 40 years. He and his wife,  Cheri, a former French teacher in Marblehead and Salem, have three children and four grandchildren. He is a lifelong fly fisherman, gardener, and nature lover.

Judith Black

Co-Founder and

Board Member

Judith is an award-winning storyteller and former director of Bridging Lives, a teen mentoring program. She leads the organization's Transportation Group and is organizing its first community-wide Sustainability Fair. Featured on stages from the Montreal Comedy Festival to the Smithsonian Institution, and 13 times at the National Storytelling Festival, she is the winner of the Oracle and Brother Blue Awards. Locally she volunteers at Lifebridge in Salem, is a member of the Marblehead Harbor Rotary Club, and sings with Calla Lilly. Her son, Solomon, USMC, serves in the U.S. State Department.

Brian Helmuth

Science Advisor

Brian is Professor of Marine Biology and Public Policy at Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center in Nahant. With over 20 years of experience working on every continent, Helmuth’s research and teaching focus on predicting the likely ecological impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems. His lab also collaborates with educators to develop cutting edge technologies and tools. Helmuth is a Fellow of the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program which trains select scientists to interact with policy makers, journalists, and the public, and in 2011 he was named a Google Science Communicators Fellow in the area of climate change.

Lynn Nadeau

Board Member

Lynn has used a clothesline and composted in the same home in Marblehead for over 40 years. She is a co-founder of HealthLink and spearheaded the creation and maintenance of the Beach Bluff Park and its Sun Circle. She currently serves as President of the Clifton Improvement Association, Treasurer of HealthLink, and is a member of the Marblehead Democratic Town Committee. She was previously a mathematics teacher and is a widow with a deep interest in the lives of her five grandchildren. She loves to swim in the sea, attends Town Meeting, and has produced a popular small book - The Promised Land: a Haggadah.

Patricia Sullivan

Board Member

Tricia is a physical therapist who works locally and internationally to improve access to rehabilitation services. Her international work includes extensive activities in Nepal where her 501c3 organization, Rehab Nepal, is collaborating with Rotary International and the American Nepal Medical Foundation to establish a rehabilitation unit and provide physical therapy in rural communities. She has a large vegetable garden and uses compost from her own compost pile and from Marblehead’s Transfer Station.
